74th Annual Golden Globes, Sit and Sip in Style posted in: Entertainment, Events, Food and Beverage, How Tos, Recipes

Hollywood award season kicks off this Sunday with the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards airs this Sunday, January 8th on NBC at 8PM EST/5PM PST. This year’s host is Jimmy Fallon, so even if you’re not typically into awards shows, Fallon just might make you a believer with his sharp wit, boyish charm and spot-on impressions. And if you are into awards shows, AND all of the fashion pomp and circumstance that goes along with them…then you can get your eye candy fix by tuning into E! News at 6PM EST/3PM PST for the red offering up close views of your favorite stars’ attire and accessories.

Whether you plan to enjoy the evening with your BFFs all dolled to the nines, stay in and channel Zsa Zsa in a silk robe, heeled Marabou slip-on and favorite chandelier earrings, or opt for low-key lounge-out in your comfiest althleisure wear, you can get festive by preparing a few easy appetizers to serve with this year’s official Golden Globes cocktail.

This year’s signature drink, “The Moët Diamond”, was created by model and Actress, Olivia Culpo. Sit back and sip in style with this smooth creation:

The Moët Diamond

3 ounces Moët Imperial Brut Champagne
½ ounce orange liqueur
2 dashes cherry bitters
1 rock candy stick

Pour orange liqueur into champagne flute and add dash of cherry bitters. Gently pour chilled champagne. Garnish with rock candy coated swizzle stick.

If you’re feeling really enthusiastic, you can prepare your own version of the official Golden Globes menu created by Chef Alberico Nunziata that over a thousand of the biggest names in Hollywood will enjoy.

As for me, I’ve perused the offerings for inspiration for my own laid-back offering of easy eats. I plan to enjoy a nice salad and
Moët Diamonds paired with cream puffs.

Superbowl XVIII – My Last Minute Menu Play Call posted in: How To, Recipes

This is my first at home-and non-event weekend since the beginning of December, so needless to say our Superbowl Sunday Celebration is going to be low-key. For those of you who totally “feel me” and still haven’t fully prepped what you’ll be serving come kick-off, and for those of you who already have everything ready already with time to spare (my hat’s off to you) you are certainly more than welcome to add any of these ideas to your spread.

So what will I be serving? Things that are quick and easy, fun and fresh.

superbowl XVI menu

What’s on my game day menu:

Pulled pork (prepped and ready from great local BBQ place)

Beer & Bacon Cheese Dip, soft pretzels

Bacon- wrapped jalenpeno poppers (hmmm, I’m seeing a theme here…)

Tortilla Chips and Guacamole and pico de gallo

Fresh cut veggies, Hummus

Vosges Bacon Chocolate Bars

No-bake cookies

Ice Cream with assorted toppings (chocolate sauce, sprinkles, whipped cream, fruits)

I’ll pair the above with a selection of domestic and import brew, soft drinks and of course bubbly because I always must have it.

If you would like to add the warm dip to your menu, here’s the recipe I’ll be using:

Beer & Bacon Cheese Dip:

  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 8oz. block of cream cheese, room temp
  • ½ cup prepared bacon, crumbled
  • 1 tsp. dry ground mustard
  • ¾ cup beer, use your favorite ale or lager

In a medium sauce pan over medium heat, warm the beer, stir in cream cheese and stir until melted, add in ½ bacon pieces, mustard, and shredded cheddar. Stir until melted and smooth. Top with remaining bacon pieces.  Serve warm – fondue pot works great for service.

For more inspiration, check out some of our previous Superbowl posts here and here! OK, I’m off to run a culinary Quarterback sneak into the kitchen to get the party fare prepped before the famished fans arrive! So what do you say…

Let’s get ready for some football!

Serve with Love: Valentine’s Day Cake Recipe {In loving Memory of Heidi Peterson Brown} posted in: Entertainment, Food and Beverage, Recipes

My friend Heidi Peterson Brown sent this post to me for one of her favorite holidays. She was always sharing her heart…her love, of  life, for family and friends, and of food with others. Anyone who had the good fortune of knowing Heidi knows that among her many admirable qualities and talents, she truly had a servant’s heart, serving God and everyone she encountered with love.  So today, this post is shared in memory of a beautiful soul who truly knew how to love.

Valentine’s Day gives us so many opportunities to love! It is the only day set aside in the year for us to show those who are special to us how much we care. What better way to show someone you love them than showing them your heart?

We found a wonderful recipe for a strawberry heart cake. It is beautiful and oh so delicious!. Whip it up and set the table with red dishes and pink napkins. Use the cake as your center piece.  It will make a beautiful dinner event that will not be soon forgotten.

And neither will you dear friend. Love you to the moon and back.

Strawberry Heart Cake Recipe

1 package white cake mix
1 (3 ounce) package strawberry gelatin
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/3 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 package (10 pounces) frozen sweetened strawberries, thawed
½ cup cold water
1/2 cup butter, softened
5 to 51/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
Red hot candies, optional

In a mixing bowl combine cake mix, gelatin and flour. Beat in oil and eggs. Drain strawberries reserving ½ cup syrup for frosting. Add berries and water to batter; mix well. Divide batter between two waxed paper lined 8 in baking pans, one square and one round. Bake with love at 350 degrees for 30 -35 minutes (square) and 35-40 minutes (round) or until cake tests done.

Cool for 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely. In a small mixing bowl combine butter and reserved syrup. Gradually add in confectioners’ sugar; beat until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Place square diagonally on a 20 inch board. Cut round cake in half. Frost cut sides; place frosted sides against the top two sides of square cake, forming a heart. Frost sides and top of cake.  Decorate with red hots if desired. Serve with love.

Yeild: 12-16 servings

National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day! posted in: Entertainment, Food and Beverage, Recipes

There’s just something about fresh, homemade pie that’s comforting, and well….homey. Being that today is National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day (and I’m enjoying a weekend , it’s the perfect day to try out a new living well recipe that I have added to my collection.

This sweet and tangy treat was first made popular during the early 1800’s. Did you know that rhubarb is actually a vegetable? well, it is. This fact makes strawberry rhubarb pie one of the rare (tasty) pies that combines fruits and vegetables into one delicious delight. In my book, any dessert that compliments  strawbabies (one of my fave fruits) and gets us to eat our veggies, deserves its own day! And with strawberry season starting, what better way to celebrate this summertime favorite than to bake one yourself. Yum!

I enjoy making individual “indi” desserts, so this  mini pie “tart” if perfect, and will create a lovely dessert presentation.  If you feel like having a Betty Crocker moment today, here’s the recipe to try:

Strawberry Rhubarb Tarts

  • 1/2 c butter (or butter substitute), softened
  • 1/2 c confectioners sugar
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2 c whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c nonfat milk
  • 5 rhubarb stalk, cleaned
  • 1/2 c water
  • 1/2 c agave (love this stuff!)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 10 strawberries, hulled and sliced

Tart Shells:

1. Mix (or blend in blender) butter, sugar, almond extract, and flour until the mixture looks like course crumb

2. Add milk. Blend until the mixture becomes dough

3. Flour the dough and roll out on a lightly floured counter or board to a 1/4″ thickness.

4. Using a 4″ round cookie cutter, cut 12 circles

5. Place a cutouts in cupcake pan to form tart shells

1. Preheat oven to 350F

2. In medium sauce pot, cook rhubarb, cinnamon and agave with water and lemon juice for approx. 5 minutes over medium heat. Allow the mixture to cool.

3. Pour filling contents into blender pitcher. Secure lid and pulse the mixture 2-3 times.

4. In medium bowl, mix the strawberries with the rhubarb mixture.

5. Divide filling evenly into each tart shell, filling each shell 2/3 full

6. Bake for 10-15min or until golden

Using this health conscious recipe, each tart has only 140 cal, 2.5g of fat and 17g sugar.

These tarts make a great summertime dessert. And if you’re life me, I like to prepare mini indi versions of great dessert when entertaining.

Wish you a Sweet Saturday!

Super Bowl Party Cocktail Recipes posted in: Recipes

Here are a few drink recipes that would be great to serve at your upcoming Super Bowl Party.

The Touchdown
2 oz bourbon
4 oz lemonade
4 oz iced tea (unsweetened)

Combine bourbon and iced tea in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with ice. Top with the lemonade

Incomplete Pass
This one’s about as simple as they come, and it’s tasty, too. Chase with a chunk of pineapple, if you so choose.

 2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. pineapple juice

1. Mix bourbon and pineapple juice in a shaker.
2. Strain into two shot glasses.

First and Ten
Another refreshing football-themed drink. It is a bit more complicated to make, so I recommend preparing a pitcher or two in advance of a party.

3 oz. gin
2 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. orange juice
2 oz. cranberry juice
2 oz. grapefruit juice
2 oz. lemon juice
2 oz. lime juice
Dash of grenadine
Splash of club soda
Float dark rum
Garnish with orange slices and Maraschino cherries
